January 23rd Savanna

Dear Parents,

Even with the shortened week we were able to fit in a good amount of learning.  The children wrapped up their study of Ancient Greece with the unit test on Wednesday.  I was quite please with how well all the students did in showing what they had learned during this unit.  We continued our multiplication math unit by learning how to multiply two digit by one digit numbers as well as two digit by two digit numbers.  The children also tried their hand at using the lattice method of multiplication for these larger numbers.  In Health we talked about how we can care for our bodies, and will continue these lessons into next week.

With the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday on Monday, we took the opportunity to talk about his life and legacy throughout the week.  The children and I discussed slavery, the Underground Railroad, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Civil Rights movement.  We discussed how Dr. King worked tirelessly to promote non-violent methods to get his message across.  The children asked many thoughtful and inquisitive questions about the inequities in our nation’s past as well as Dr. King and his work.  We will continue these important discussions in the coming weeks.

Below are some important upcoming events.  Please take moment to put them on your calendars.  I hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend.
