Fun SchoolTube Video

This SchoolTube video was shared with me this afternoon.  It is a cute review of the four explorers put to a very familiar tune.  We watched it in class and learn the chorus.  The kids asked me to post the link so they could watch it at home as well.  Enjoy!

Savanna 4-20-12

Dear Parents:

We have had another good week of learning.  We continued our unit on Explorers by learning about the travels and accomplishments of Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce de Leon, and Jacques Cartier.  We will learn about Christopher Newport next week.  I plan to wrap this unit up by the end of next week.  We began learning about Force, Motion and Simple Machines in Science, worked with Fractions in Math, and began working on writing poetry in Language Arts.  We also reviewed writing reading journal response and reviewed new writing prompts as well.  As you can see we covered a lot of ground this week.

Our SOL testing dates have been confirmed.  We will be testing on Friday, May 18th, Monday, May 21st, Tuesday, May 22nd and Wednesday, May 23rd. The children will be given one subject test each day and will have as much time as they need to complete these tests.  We will begin a general review of content with the use of various review sites on the Internet next week.  The children have already begun SOL review packets in class as part of their independent work.  It is my hope that the children will come away from our review with a feeling of confidence of what they know as well as what types of questions are asked.  There is a letter from Mr. Pascal in the Friday Folders that I would urge you to also read.  One final request, please do not schedule any doctor appointments, or out of town trips during this testing period.

Please take a look at the schedule of upcoming events.  I hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend.

Savanna Update

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that the month of March is over, we have completed the third quarter and we are in our last months of school.  Wasn’t it just Thanksgiving a couple of weeks ago?  This also makes me realize that we are headed into much warmer weather and all the wonderful spring sports.  If your child is playing a sport could you please send me a copy of their schedule I would appreciate it.

This past week was quite busy as we talked out what we all did over the break, got back to learning and our school routines, and enjoyed learning about South African dance at the Humanities Assembly. We began our unit on Explorers and will learn about Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce de Leon, Jacques Cartier, and Christopher Newport.  In Science we continue to discuss Energy, Force and Motion.  We will finish up this unit by the end of next week.  In Math we continued our study of fractions while thinking about ways to divide pretend brownies and cookies to equally share with friends.  We also created imaginative houses using different sized fractions. In Health we discussed alcohol, and tobacco and how these affect our bodies.  Overall we had a good week of learning.

As we have entered the final quarter of the year, the children and I took a bit of time this week to discuss how to continue the good work they have been doing all year and finish the year strong.  We reviewed the need to complete all assigned homework, remember books and homework each day, and to practice Tuckahoe’s three “R’s” (respect, responsibility and rights of others) each and every day. We all agreed, we can do this with positive attitudes.

Below are dates to put on your calendars for the coming months.  Please check the flyers in Friday Folders for additional information on these events as well.

Upcoming Events

April 25-Career Day
April 25- Third Quarter Report Cards Issued
April 26- ETC Play

I hope everyone enjoys the weekend.

Class Pictures

Good Morning Everyone-

I have had a couple of emails concerning the class pictures.  According to Tracey Harp, the picture chairman, its seems that Lifetouch separated out the class pictures as not all children pre-ordered them.  We should be getting them shortly.

Thanks for your patience.
