January 30th Savanna

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that it is the end of January.  Where has this month gone?  With all the delays and indoor recesses, it has been a bit of a challenge for everyone to be fully focused on learning.  I know that the children enjoyed being able to get outside on Thursday for recess and running off a bit of the pent up energy.

In recent weeks I have heard from many of the children that they have been “too busy” to do their homework.  I would like to ask you to take a couple of minutes each night to go over your child’s homework with them.  Check on what is to be done, and if needed help your child devise a plan on how they can accomplish getting it done. While I understand that they all have activities after school, your additional help with the time management at home is greatly appreciated.

As you know, the children will have a test on multiplication and division on Tuesday of next week.  This test will focus on the vocabulary the children have learned during this unit.  In addition, they will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of multiplication and division fact families 0-12.  In addition they will demonstrate their ability to multiply two-digit by one-digit problems, and solve word problems.  This week we began our next Science Unit.  We will be focused on ecosystems, food chains and food webs in the coming weeks.  In Language Arts we continue to focus on writing skills, spelling and reading comprehension. Even with the weather challenges, we continue to move forward.

Below are some important upcoming events.  Please take moment to put them on your calendars.  Have a nice weekend.

January 23rd Savanna

Dear Parents,

Even with the shortened week we were able to fit in a good amount of learning.  The children wrapped up their study of Ancient Greece with the unit test on Wednesday.  I was quite please with how well all the students did in showing what they had learned during this unit.  We continued our multiplication math unit by learning how to multiply two digit by one digit numbers as well as two digit by two digit numbers.  The children also tried their hand at using the lattice method of multiplication for these larger numbers.  In Health we talked about how we can care for our bodies, and will continue these lessons into next week.

With the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday on Monday, we took the opportunity to talk about his life and legacy throughout the week.  The children and I discussed slavery, the Underground Railroad, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Civil Rights movement.  We discussed how Dr. King worked tirelessly to promote non-violent methods to get his message across.  The children asked many thoughtful and inquisitive questions about the inequities in our nation’s past as well as Dr. King and his work.  We will continue these important discussions in the coming weeks.

Below are some important upcoming events.  Please take moment to put them on your calendars.  I hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend.

Savana 1-16-15

Dear Parents,

Here we are at the end of the second quarter of school.  It is hard to believe that that the year is about half over.  All the children have shown gains since the beginning of the year, which are exciting to see.  It is always around this time of year that the children move from being second graders to truly being third graders.  Their confidence and skill begin to solidify and they start to take off as independent learners.  While there has been much progress from September, there are a couple of items I would like to continue to ask you to do at home to support your child. First, review his/her assignment notebook each night to help with the pacing of assignments as well as making sure assignments are completed on time. Second, if your child has forgotten an assignment or book help them figure out a strategy for making up the assignment. Third, please be sure to send in a note if there is any change in your child’s dismissal. This includes going home with a friend, enrichment classes, or being picked up by you. Please understand this is a safety issue for your child.  We need to ensure that all children are being dismissed correctly each afternoon, and your help with notes for your child, helps us do this successfully.

Thank you for all you do at home to help your child.

January 9th Savanna

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!  What a wild way to welcome everyone back from Winter Break.  The children were so excited to see the snow on Tuesday and all shared their adventures in getting to school.  Thankfully, all the children who came to school were able to get home safely as well.  The delays due to ice and cold created yet another buzz among the children.  It also gave us the opportunity to talk about the serious need to dress appropriately for the weather.  Overall, we enjoyed getting back together, catching up on what we did over the break, and settling back into our school routines.

As we look toward the coming weeks, we will continue our work in multiplication and division.  In Social Studies we will wrap up our study of Ancient Greece and will have a unit test on what we have learned.  In Language Arts we will continue with our writing, word work and grammar studies.  As we close out the second quarter, I will be looking for the children to continue to take responsibility for their work and supplies.  In addition, I will continue to urge the children to figure out a solution, should they leave their assignments at school.

I hope your weekend is enjoyable.

                                                               Sincerely,

                                                               Mrs. DiNardo
