Savanna 4-19

Dear Parents:

We have had another good week of learning.  We kicked off our unit on Explorers by trying to find a hidden dollar in the area between the Peter Rabbit Garden and the Greek Pavilion.  The children enjoyed pretending to be explorers and were able to understand how difficult the search for “gold” must have been.   We are just about to finish our unit on Simple Machines in Science, began to discuss decimals in Math, and began working on writing poetry in Language Arts.  We also reviewed how to write a reading journal response and reviewed new writing prompts as well.  As you can see we covered a lot of ground this week.

As we look towards next week, we will have a full day of school on Wednesday, April 24th.  In addition the children will begin working on SOL review packets in class as part of their independent work.  It our hope that the children will come away from this review with a feeling of confidence of what they know as well as what types of questions they will be asked.  As part of our review we will also have the children practice with some of the Internet resources available on the Tuckahoe website.

As we all know, this is a very busy time of year both in school and at home.  Hopefully the schedule of upcoming events will help you with your calendars.  I hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend.

4-12-13 Savanna

Dear Parents-

I want to begin this week’s note by thanking everyone who was able to join us on Wednesday afternoon for our Wax Museum.  The children worked hard on their research and presentations over the past month.  It was wonderful to see how confident all the children were, as they became their person for the many visitors.

In addition to the Wax Museum we also held our “Soils Summit” on Wednesday morning.  This hands-on activity allowed the children to learn about weathering, layers of soil, plant in our AFAC garden and see how erosion and run-off can harm our watershed.  It was a warm, but active morning of learning.  In addition to these two events, in class we have continued to learn about fractions, famous Americans, simple machines, and writing in our Reading Journals.  Overall we had a good week of learning.

The coming weeks will be quite busy both here at school as well as with all the afterschool activities in full gear.  I would like to remind you to please send a note if your child is attending an enrichment activity or going home with a friend.  Below are dates to put on your calendars for the coming month.  Please note the SOL testing dates.  Friday Folders will have additional information for many of these events as well.

Enjoy the weekend.

April 11th Field Trip

Good Morning Everyone-

I am writing to update everyone on the field trip that was scheduled for tomorrow.  As you may know, the entire Third Grade was to have gone to Acadia Farms at Woodlawn Plantation tomorrow and Friday.  Unfortunately, we were unable to secure busses for both days.  As we did not want two classes to go on the trip and three not be able to, we decided to cancel the trip entirely.

We do have busses secured for our trip to Imagination Stage on Thursday, April 25th.  The slips for this  field trip should be out in this week's Friday Folders.

April10th Happenings

Good Afternoon Everyone-

I hope you are all enjoying the summer like wether this afternoon.  I wanted to let you know about the schedule for all of tomorrow's activities.

In the morning from 9:15-noon we will be having our annual "Soils Summit."  This is a series of five rotations outdoors for the students to learn about soil, erosion, and gardening.  This is a fun morning of hands on learning.

In the afternoon from 2-3 pm will be our Wax Museum.  The children did a wonderful job this afternoon at our dress rehearsal.  I was most impressed by the level of confidence everyone exhibited throughout their presentations.  To get ready for tomorrow I have asked everyone to practice a couple of more times tonight to make sure they are ready for tomorrow.

I hope, if your schedule will allow, you will be able to join us to see the kids in action tomorrow.  They are all very excited to show off their hard work.

Savanna 4-5

Dear Parents:

Welcome back from Spring Break.  It sounded like everyone had an enjoyable week off.  It was fun to hear all the stories and details on Monday.  As a class we discussed the fact that we are now in the last quarter of the year and the expectations for these final weeks.

The major focus of our week has been on learning about Famous Americans (many whom will be represented in our Wax Museum) as well as several other individuals.  In the reading and research the children were answering questions similar to those they had answered for their own Wax Museum note cards.    Overall, the children did a good job on their initial note cards.  In reviewing the cards many did require additional details to make the “story” more interesting.  With the changes made, the children have begun to practice with each other in class.  We will continue to work on this project in class Monday and have a full dress rehearsal on Tuesday afternoon.

In Math this week we continued our work with fractions and plan to test this unit out late next week.  We also began reading about medicines, and drugs in Health.  Science will begin to focus on force, motion and Simple Machines.  Next week we will begin our Social Studies unit on Explorers.  As you can see, there continues to be much to learn in the coming weeks.

With the spring sports starting up, I would like to ask for soccer, baseball, lacrosse, and softball schedules.  I know games are a couple of weeks away, but I would appreciate schedules when you get them.  Lastly, please be sure to look over the upcoming activities and mark your calendars accordingly.

I hope everyone will be able to join us for the Wax Museum on Wednesday April 10th from 2-3 pm.  The children have worked hard this past few weeks and I am excited to see them share what they have learned with you.

                                                                                                Sincerely

                                                                                                Mrs. DiNardo
