12-5-13 Savanna

Dear Parents,

We got back into the swing of school after the Thanksgiving break this week.  Everyone shared what they had done over the break, and all the yummy dinners that were shared with family and friends.  We also spent time this week reviewing the rules and expectations of our class and school.  Once we got reacquainted with classmates it was time to get back down to our daily routines.

In Language Arts, we took the information shared and used it to work on paragraph formation.  Our focus was, and will continue to be, on the creation of general topic sentences, developing three strong detail sentences, and end the paragraph with a concluding sentence that wraps up the entire paragraph.  In addition to paragraph writing we are working on identification of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and other parts of speech.  In Math, we have almost completed Unit 5.  This unit has covered rounding, data gathering, learning about tables and graphs, as well as addition and subtraction.    The children will have a test on these skills on Tuesday, December 10th.  In Science the children are learning about animal life cycles and will expand their understanding of various habitats prior to the winter break.  We finished our study of Ancient Greece yesterday and will move into our study of Ancient Rome when we return to school in January.

In the Friday Folders today you will find a note about our annual visit from the London Brass Rubbing Centre.   The program will begin at 9:30 with a 30-minute explanation of the art of brass rubbing and who would have had a rubbing made for them.  From 10-12:00 pm all the children will have an opportunity to make their rubbing as well as complete several other craft projects.  If you can lend a hand for all or part of this special project, please let me know.   Thank you for considering volunteering during this busy time of the year.

With the basketball season in full swing, several of the children have asked me if I can come to their games.  I would enjoy the opportunity to fit some of these in, but will need schedules to coordinate the dates.  If you would be kind enough to forward me your child’s schedule, I would appreciate it.

Finally, I will be out from Monday, December 16th through Friday January 3rd.   I will be having surgery at the beginning of the week and have been told to expect a three to four week recovery.  Mrs. Hennessey-Niland will be covering the class for me while I am out.  She is very familiar with the class and I am confident that all will go well during my absence.

I hope you all have a nice weekend.

                                                               Sincerely,

                                                               Mrs. DiNardo

Savanna 11-22-13

Dear Parents-

The first report cards of the year came home with your child today.  As I have told the children, this is a snapshot of where they are academically today. This snapshot has the ability to change all the time.  I have also told the kids, the most important grade, to me, on this report is their work and effort grade.  Please remember that an “S” and a “C” indicate that your child is doing work at grade level.  Overall, I am pleased with how well all the children are doing.  The blue card included in the envelope goes into further detail about the Arlington County grading policy.  Please sign and return both the blue card and the yellow comment sheet in the envelope on Monday, November 25th

I hope you and your families enjoy the holiday break and the time together.  I want you all to know how thankful I am to be your child’s teacher.   Each child has touched my heart in a special and unique way. I am grateful to be part of their lives.  To all of you, thank you for sharing them with me each day.

                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                        Mrs. DiNardo

Savanna- 11-15-13

Sorry for this late post of last week's Savanna.

Dear Parents,

This week has been one focused on service to others.  On Friday of last week, we discussed how the Veteran’s Day holiday began and how we can honor the men and women who work tirelessly to protect all the freedoms we enjoy each day.  To show our appreciation, the children made cards that were distributed this week to members of the military serving in our area.  I was really struck by the caring words of thanks the children wrote in their cards.  We also finished up our work sorting all the Unicef monies.  We talked about the typhoon that recently struck the Philippines and how the money we collected may help the children affected by this disaster.

As we have begun the second quarter the children and I have spent a good amount of time this week discussing how they are feeling about the amount of work both in and outside of class.  In our talks, it was evident that the kids are feeling a fair amount of stress about how they can manage their homework as well as their extra-curricular activities.  I was very impressed with their honesty.  I am going to switch a few things around in the classroom to allow the kids 5-10 minutes at the end of the day, after they have finished writing down their assignments, to begin their homework.  All the children seemed to think this might be helpful. I will be checking in with the kids to see if this change is helping them get their work done.

We also had several conversations this week about wearing proper clothing to school as the weather gets colder.  Please know we do go outside everyday and that the children need the proper clothing in order to be comfortable as we do so.  Your help with this matter is greatly appreciated.  Also, if your child is missing any clothing items, water bottles, or lunchboxes, there are several tables of unclaimed items in the front of the building.  Please take a few minutes to see if any of your child’s items may be there.

Below are a few important dates to put on your calendars.

Savanna 11-8-13

Dear Parents,

This week has been full of “teachable moments.”  The Outdoor Lab began our week with hands-on-learning about simple machines.  We had a fun time hiking through the woods to the various learning stations.  Ask your child how many third graders it takes to lift up an Outdoor Lab staff member with a lever.  You may be a bit surprised by the answer you get.  After lunch, the children learned about different animals at the Animal Lab.  We talked about the difference between omnivores, carnivores and herbivores as well as adaptations and camouflage for survival.  Thanks to all of the parents who joined us.  On Wednesday we continued our learning as we discussed representative democracy and how Ancient Greece also used a form of democracy in their city-states. We also spent time talking about Veteran’s Day and made cards to send to men and women who are currently serving our country.  Finally, we continued to collect Unicef boxes and separate the donations into coins and bills and estimating how much money has been collected to date.  All in all, it has been a very good week of learning.

As you know, Monday was the end of the first quarter.  Overall the children have adjusted to third grade well.  They are taking responsibility for their assignments and their books with ease, and are able to demonstrate what they have learned in a variety of ways.  The pace of our studies will increase (just a bit) during the second quarter. I am confident that the children will be able to meet these new challenges if they keep doing the good job they have done to date.

Below are some important November dates to place on your calendars.  If you could please let me know if your child will not be at school on Monday or Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving I would appreciate it.

Mon. 11/11- Veterans Day Observation- No School
                  Fri. 11/22- Report Cards Issues
                  Wed 11/27-Fri 11/29 Thanksgiving Break

         Enjoy the weekend!

                                                               Sincerely,

                                                               Mrs. DiNardo

Savanna 11-1-13

Dear Parents,

I want to begin this note with a thank you to Deb Schueren, MarySue Gordon, and Kim McCormick for coordinating a great party after our parade on Thursday.  Thanks also to everyone who contributed to, and joined us for the parade and party.  It was a fun afternoon and the children enjoyed this Tuckahoe tradition.

It is hard to believe that Monday will be the end of the first quarter.  The children have made many changes since September which can be seen in all parts of their day.  For the most part, everyone is used to the daily routines, the homework procedures, and done well with test taking.  The pace of our studies will begin to increase (just a bit) during the second quarter. I am confident that the children will be able to meet these new challenges if they keep doing the good job they have done to date.  I would like to remind you to go over your child’s assignments with them when they get home and have them explain what they need to do that evening.  If it is a long term project, use a calendar and help pace out the project.  Once your child has completed their work, review it with them, and then have them put all their work and supplies back in their backpack.

I would like to remind everyone to let me, as well as Mirna Lopez (mirna.lopez@apsva.us) our attendance secretary, know if your child will be out for the day.  This can be done by email the day they are out.  After your child returns to school, they will have both class work and homework to make up.  They will be given a couple of days to make up any missed work.  If they need a longer amount of time to complete these assignments, please let me know.

As you know we are headed to the Outdoor Lab on Monday.  Please remember to send your child to school with a bag lunch, including a drink.  There is NO food service at the lab.  Also it is usually 10-15 degrees cooler up on Buttermilk Mountain, so be sure your child is dressed in layers, with closed toe shoes.  We are looking forward to spending the day outside and learning about simple machines.

Below are some important November dates to place on your calendars.  If you could please let me know if your child will not be at school on Monday or Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving I would appreciate it.

Sat. Nov. 2- Tuckahoe/H-B 5K and Fun Run
Mon. 11/4- Outdoor Lab Field Trip/End of 1st Quarter
Tues. 11/5- Election Day- No School for Students
Wed. 11/6- Full Day of School- NO EARLY RELEASE
Mon. 11/11- Veterans Day Observation- No School
                  Fri. 11/22- Report Cards Issues
                  Wed 11/27-Fri 11/29 Thanksgiving Break

         Enjoy the weekend!

                                                               Sincerely,

                                                               Mrs. DiNardo

Savanna

Dear Parents,

We have covered a good amount of ground this week.  The children learned about the homeless population here in Arlington and participated in the annual Mini-Walk for the Homeless on Tuesday. The children were able to walk several laps of the sidewalk adjacent to the school to show their support of this worthy cause.  In addition to helping those here in Arlington, the children are also being given the opportunity to help children throughout the world through “Trick or Treat for Unicef” this Halloween.  The children are bringing home a letter from Mrs. Brown today, outlining the program.  They will bring home their collection box next week.  I would like to encourage all the children to bring their boxes with them as they go trick or treating and collect for children around the world.  In the past Tuckahoe students have collected more than $7,500 in pennies, nickels and dimes.

Back in the classroom, we are about to complete our first unit in Math, have practiced the Scientific Method in Science and worked on where to find information when reading and how to identify and use common and proper nouns.  The children also were introduced to the new online typing program.  We are asking that the children spend 10 minutes per night on this program.  Our goal is to have the children become proficient at two-handed typing by the end of the year.  In addition to the work at home we will be typing in class as well.  All in all we are moving along well.  As I mentioned before, I would like your continued help with going over your child’s assignments with them when they get home and have them explain what they need to do that evening.  If it is a long term project, use a calendar and help pace out the project.  Once your child has completed their work, review it with them, and then have them put all their work and supplies back in their backpack.

There are several “housekeeping” items I would like to bring to your attention.  First, I would like to encourage everyone to reach out to Deb Schueren (Aya’s mom) to see how you might help with the Halloween party on Thursday.  We will need some help with costume changing around 1:30 pm and setting up the party.  The parade is at 2:00 pm and we should be back in the classroom around 2:45.  This is a fun afternoon for the children and your help is greatly appreciated.  Deb’s email is bdbloomer@gmail.com.  Please also review the Mid-Week Update on the blog if you have not had an opportunity to do so as of yet.

Below are some important October/November dates to place on your calendars.  If you could please let me know if your child will not be at school on Monday or Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving I would appreciate it.

 Fri. 10/25- Harvest Fest- 7:00pm
                  Thurs. 10/31- Halloween Parade- 2:00pm
Sat. Nov. 2- Tuckahoe/H-B 5K and Fun Run
Mon. 11/4- Outdoor Lab Field Trip/End of 1st Quarter
Tues. 11/5- Election Day- No School for Students
Wed. 11/6- Full Day of School- NO EARLY RELEASE
Mon. 11/11- Veterans Day Observation- No School
                  Fri. 11/22- Report Cards Issued
                  Wed 11/27-Fri 11/29 Thanksgiving Break-No School

As always, I want to thank you for all you do at home to ensure that your child comes to school each day ready to learn.  I hope everyone stays warm over the weekend and good luck to anyone running in the Marine Corps Marathon!

                                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                                    Mrs. DiNardo

Mid Week Up-Date

Good Afternoon Everyone-

I have a couple of housekeeping items that I would like to bring to your attention prior to the Savanna on Friday.

1. I have gotten back most of the permission slips for our Field Trip to the Outdoor Lab on MONDAY NOVEMBER 4th.  At this time I have 5 parents who have indicated they would like to chaperone which is my limit for this trip. I appreciate your willingness to help out the class in this manner.

2. A gentle reminder that as you are filling out permission skips for your child, please be sure to write your child's name at the top of the form.

3. We began a new typing program today in class.  The program is accessible from the Tuckahoe website and can be done from home.  We are asking that each child practice their typing as part of their evening homework for 10 minutes each night.  Our goal is to have the children become proficient typists by the end of the year.  Your child's user name is their student id # that they use for the library as well as the cafeteria.  Their password is their birth date (mmddyy).  Most the the kids have this memorized so it should not pose a problem.

4. Now that the children are learning recorder, Mrs. J our Music teacher will be assigning 5 minutes of practice each night on the recorder.  While this new skill may be a bit challenging for some at the beginning, I am always amazed at the progress the children make by the end of the year. The music and the songs that the children are learning each week will be in their binders and need to be brought back to school on Thursday mornings along with the recorders.

5. As you might imagine the end of our day at dismissal time can get quite confusing with 25 students going in 25 different directions.  I am asking for a bit of help to reduce some of the confusion.           1. When your child has a change in dismissal, please send me a note.  2. If your child is going home with another child who rides a bus, please include the bus number of the child they are going home with.  This will help with getting bus passes from the front office.   3. If your child is going to an enrichment class after school, I need a note each time they go to a class.   I know this may sound repetitive, but it is your child's safety that I am concerned about.

5.  Please remember that Harvest Fest is this Friday evening, October 25th.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs. D

Math Test Unit 1 10/25/13

In your child's assignment notebook this evening you will see that there will be a math test on Unit 1 next Friday.  Below are the different areas that will be covered in this test.  Over the weekend if you would like to spend 5-10 minutes with your child reviewing any of these area that would be helpful.  Please know there will be review work over the week to ensure the children are ready for this unit test.  The math test will cover the following topics:

1. Place Value- ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten, thousand, hundred thousand.

2. Greater than, less than and equal to.

3. Ordering numbers from greatest to least, and least to greatest.

4. Adding two and three digit numbers.

5. Fact Families of three numbers.

6. Subtracting numbers with and without regrouping.

7. Vocabulary:

Addend:  The number that you add together in an addition sentence.

Sum: The answer you get in an addition sentence.

Difference: The answer you get in a subtraction sentence,

Commutative Property of Addition: The property of addition that tells us that the order of the addends does not change the sum. (2 + 3 = 5 and 3 + 2 = 5)

Identity Property of Addition:  The property of addition that tells us that any number added to zero remains the same. ( 5 + 0 = 5 and 3 + 0 = 3)

Math Homework This Evening

Dear Parents-

I wanted to give you a heads up that for this evening's homework. The children are missing a piece of paper for the first 5 questions.  As this assignment is not due until Friday, I would encourage the children to do the other problems this evening.  I will give them the missing sheet tomorrow, and they can finish their work tomorrow night.

Hope this doesn't cause too many difficulties for you this evening.

Mrs. D.

Savanna 10-11-13

Dear Parents,

I would like to begin this week with a big thank you to the parents who accompanied us today to the National Building Museum.  From the hum of excited voices as we left, through the morning of instruction and building everyone seemed to enjoy the day.  The city we built was both fun and functional.  Who knows, maybe the next generation of city planners will include one of our students!

As you may know from your child’s assignment notebook, we wrapped up our first unit in Social Studies on Tuesday.  We are in the middle of our first unit in Math, and I would expect to test this out in the next two weeks.  I also plan to introduce the Scientific Method in Science next week.  In Language Arts we have been working in our Word Study Groups, and discussing how to identify important information in non-fiction text.  All in all we are getting into full swing.

I would again like to remind everyone to take a few minutes each evening to go over the assignments your child has for the evening.  They should be able to complete these assignments with little assistance from you, but a bit of help from you to go over the pacing of the work will help.  I will say for the most part assignments are coming back on time and well done.

The leaves are beginning to change outside out window and the temperature is fluctuating with early signs of change.  This signals me to take a moment out to remind everyone that the children do need to be dressed appropriately for the weather each day.  The children do go outside each day for recess and we want them to be warm enough to enjoy their time on the playground.

Below you will find a list of some of the upcoming events at school.  Please mark the dates on your calendars.

Mon. 10/14- Columbus Day- No School for students
Tues. 10/22- Mini-Walk for the Homeless
              Fri. 10/25- Harvest Fest- 7:00pm
              Thurs. 10/31- Halloween Parade- 2:00pm
Mon. 11/4- Outdoor Lab Field Trip
Tues. 11/5- Election Day- No School for Students

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.

                                                 Sincerely,

                                                 Mrs. DiNardo

Friday, October 4, 2013

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the end of another week.  We have had a solid week of learning in all areas.  In Math we continue to work on place and number value, identifying addition strategies, using mental math, and working with larger sums, including money!  In Social Studies we are just about finished with our first unit on Maps and Globes.  As you know our first test will be on Tuesday, October 8th.  The children have completed their study guide and should do a little (10-15 minutes) of review over the weekend.  We also began Word Study groups this week as well as continued to do additional word work.  All in all, it has been a good week.

As you know our first field trip of the year is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8th.  We are fortunate that the National Building Museum is privately funded and the government shut-down will not effect our day of building.  I appreciate everyone who volunteered to help out with chaperoning as well as with all the lovely supply donations.  Please know there will be another opportunity to chaperone this fall, as we are headed to the Outdoor Lab on November 4th or 6th.  Information about this trip will be sent under separate cover.

Enrichment classes are slated to being next week.  In order to help me get your child to the right location, I will need a note each day of the enrichment class.  For those children who attend Extended Day, they will go there first, and then will be escorted to their class.  Please let Dana Weber, Extended Day Supervisor, know if your child will be attending any classes.  On a related note, should your child have a change in dismissal and will not be attending Extended Day, please let both Dana and me know of these changes.  These notes help us to ensure your child’s safety at the end of the day.

I look forward to meeting with everyone during our Parent-Teacher Conference next week.  I enjoy these conversations as it helps me to understand your child a bit better.  From the conferences I have had so far, it is good to hear that the children are adjusting to the new routines fairly well, and they seem to like the class.  Much thanks goes to you for all the work you do at home to ensure your child is ready for school each day.

I hope everyone enjoys the weekend.

                                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                                    Mrs. DiNardo

Savanna 9-27-13

Dear Parents,

It is so good to have had the feel of fall in the air this week!  We are well into our routines and the children are all working hard to keep up with their responsibilities.  I am very pleased with their (and your) efforts to date.  Remember this is a process and perfection is not expected, rather trying your best.

The children have been learning about maps and globes in Social Studies, and how to organize information in their composition books.  In Math we continue to work with place value, how to identify numbers in a variety of ways as well as adding larger numbers.  In Language Arts we have focused on how to identify important information in non-fiction text, identifying robust vocabulary words and using them in context, and learning about pronouns.

I appreciate all the offers of help that I received at Back to School Night.  I will be reaching out to those of you who signed up over the weekend to confirm and work out the specifics of the different jobs.  This also goes for those of you who showed an interest to chaperone our field trip to the National Building Museum.

I would like to remind everyone that the children might need a sweater or light jacket when they come to school as the temperature begins to fall.  This will also mean reminders to bring these items home each evening.  Please remember that we do go outside everyday, and we would like for your children to be dressed appropriately for the weather.  Also, we are beginning to see the first colds in the classroom.  When assessing your child’s ability to come to school with a cold, please remember that we ask if your child has a fever that they stay at home, and not return until they have been fever free for 24 hours.  If your child is sick and not coming to school, please call the Attendance Line (703-228-8320) and report your child’s absence.  Please know that in the classroom the children are being reminded to wash their hands several times a day, as well as to wipe down their desks a couple of times a week.

I hope everyone enjoys a relaxing weekend.

                                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                                    Mrs. DiNardo

Mid-Week Update

Good Evening Everyone-

I have a couple of housekeeping matters that I would like to bring to your attention prior to Friday's Savanna Update.

1. As the weather is changing, please be sure your child has a jacket on chilly mornings.  The children are going outside in the mornings for PE and may need the extra layer of warmth.

2. If textbooks come home for an assignment, please help your child to remember to bring them back to school in the morning, as we will be using them in class the next day.

3. All picture monies need to be returned by Monday 9/30 for your child's picture to be taken.

4. Thank you to all of you who volunteered to help out in various capacities.  I will be getting back to you as soon as I can to confirm dates and times.

5. Conference confirmation slips will be coming home with your child this week.

6. We had our first lock-down drill today.  All went well and the children did a great job.  We had a long conversation afterwards about why we practice these drills, and how my first job is to keep them safe.

I hope the rest of the week goes well for everyone.  Please check back for updates on Friday.

Savanna

Dear Parents,

I would like to thank those of you who were able to attend Back to School Night on Tuesday evening. It was so nice to meet you all.  I realize there was a lot of information shared in a short period of time, however I do hope you came away from the evening with a bit of an understanding about the year ahead.  While it is a year of change and transition for your child, remember, it is a process and there will be a lot of baby-steps along the way.

It is amazing to me that three weeks of school are under our belts.  We have accomplished quite a lot this month.  In Reading we are learning how to look for important words in non-fiction text, and to “read” the pictures for information.  In Math we have been reviewing number value and place and working with groups of ten and hundred.  Assignment notebooks and binders are now more familiar and papers are where they need to be for the most part.  Most importantly, we are enjoying each other’s company and learning to work together as a community of learners. Looking back there are many successes to celebrate.

I do have one housekeeping items I need your help with.  If your child is playing a fall sport, please send me their schedule.  I do like to get out over the weekend and catch a game or two. As always, thank you for all you do to send your child to school excited and ready to learn.  Enjoy the weekend.

                                                               Sincerely,

                                                               Mrs. DiNardo

Welcome to the Savanna- 9-13-13

Dear Parents,

We have accomplished quite a bit this week.  All of the beginning of the year assessments are complete, which the children were quite relieved about. In Math we have been reviewing number and place value while working with groups of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands.  Assignment notebooks and binders are now more familiar and papers are where they need to be for the most part.  Most important is that we are enjoying each other’s company and learning to work together as a community of learners. Looking back there are many successes to celebrate.

As we look towards next week I want to bring your attention to Back to School Night on Tuesday evening, September 17th.  The program will begin at 7:00 pm in the Gym and then move into the classrooms.  I hope you will be able to join us for this evening of information, and opportunity to volunteer both in and outside of the classroom. Please remember that this event is intended for parents only.

With this newsletter, I have begun my blog for this year.  You can access it through the main Tuckahoe Website.  Go to the “Classes” tab and click on “3rd Grade”.  Under my name there is a link to my blog.  I will be using this my primary method to keep you up to date on what is happening both in our classroom as well as posting upcoming events.  As I will make updates to the Savanna during the week, I am asking that you visit this blog a couple of times per week to stay up to date on what is happening in our class.

As always, thank you for all you do to send your child to school excited and ready to learn.  Hope you all enjoy your weekend

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                    Mrs. DiNardo
